“I wondered what happened to you,” George said as he spotted Herbie alone on the terrace. A speedboat passed in the distance. The setting sun reflected in the windows of the mansions that lined the Intracoastal

Herbie leaned over the railing and looked down. “Are you afraid of heights, George?”

George sidled up next to Herbie. “Not particularly. At least not with a high railing holding me back.”

“Sometimes I wonder what it must be like to fly free. Like the birds. Gliding along the breeze without a care. I wonder if Willy is doing that now. Drifting off somewhere, floating along. Not a care in the world.”

George sighed. “I hope so. That would be nice.”

Herbie pressed forward on the railing, turning toward George with a dopey smile. “So, was she nice?”

George caught a whiff of Herbie’s breath. “How much have you had to drink? You smell like a distillery.”

Herbie pressed up against George as they stood shoulder to shoulder. “Me? A few. Lady Sylvia didn’t seem to find me appealing. That’s happening more and more. Do you think I’m losing my touch? Tell me the truth.”

“We need to get you some coffee.”

“No,” Herbie said. “First tell me about your lady friend. Did she dump you too? No, of course not. Not handsome George.”

George didn’t want to discuss Eleanor. And certainly not with Herbie in his current condition. “Where’d you go? The last I saw, you were wooing Sylvia with your impressive powers of persuasion.”

Herbie bit his lip. “When you take a woman by the arm, and she resists you at every step, you really can’t consider that persuasion.”

“True,” George agreed.

“She was madder than a newborn baby slapped on the ass after a breech birth.”

“Nice analogy. Remind me to never repeat it.”

Herbie smiled. “She doesn’t like me. And to be honest, I’m not so sure she’s very likable.”

“Sounds like a match made in heaven,” George said sarcastically.

“And what about the gal you were with? Ellen?”

George looked over his shoulder. They were still alone on the terrace. “Eleanor. She’s nice,” he said, downplaying his enthusiasm over meeting a woman he clicked with.

“You’re a sad case, George. You need a woman to get your life in gear. Maybe this Ellen is just the right one.”

“Eleanor. And what about you, Herbie? What do you need?”

“I’m hopeless,” Herbie said wistfully. “A four-time loser. I don’t dare try again. Oh sure, I play hit and miss with the ladies. And it’s fun. But it doesn’t last long. I guess there’s not much to me beyond my boyish charm. And I suspect that too is wearing thin. Maybe Jeanette was right. She always thought I was shallow.”

“Don’t say that, Herbie. That isn’t true.”

Herbie leaned back, holding onto the railing. “She never liked me, George. Admit it.”

“She was hurt for her sister. She blamed you for the failure of the marriage.”

“Like a failed marriage can ever be one person’s fault. You know, George, it takes two.”

George nodded. “Yes. But there has to be someone to blame. Someone who pulled the trigger.
